How symbols carry what arguments cannot

A symbol does not settle a question; it lets us remain in relationship with more than one answer.

An argument moves toward resolution. A symbol can remain open.

A door is an object, but it can also hold threshold, privacy, invitation, escape, and the fear of what waits on the other side. None of these meanings cancels the others. The image grows more alive as they gather.

This is why symbolic practices can be helpful when explanation has reached its limit. A dream, a card, a small object carried through a transition—each can hold contradiction without forcing a verdict.

To work with a symbol is not to treat it as a code with one correct translation. It is to notice relationship. Why this image now? What feeling arrives beside it? Which meaning feels inherited, and which feels newly yours?

Reason is useful for checking claims about the world. Symbol is useful for approaching the worlds within experience. We need not ask one to do the other’s work.

Sometimes a life changes because we found the right explanation. Sometimes it changes because an image allowed us to stay near what we could not yet say.
